World Debut Of All-New Venza At 2008 North American International Auto Show

January 14, 2008 – Detroit, MI - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the all-new 2009 Venza crossover sedan at a press conference here today at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Venza will raise the crossover vehicle to new levels by combining a unique blend of sedan refinement and sport utility vehicle (SUV) functionality.

2009 Toyota Venza

2009 Toyota Venza

"The all-new Venza was developed as a vehicle that combines the styling, comfort and fun-to-drive performance elements of a five-passenger sedan with the surprising utility of an SUV," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. "This winning combination will be ideal for active ‘boomers' and young couples with small families."

All aspects of Venza's engineering and design were targeted specifically for the North American market where it will be sold exclusively. Venza was primarily engineered at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., and designed at Toyota's Calty design studios in Newport Beach, Calif. and Ann Arbor, Mich. Venza will be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK), in Georgetown, Ky.

The development focus of the Venza design team was to create a new crossover vehicle that shifted away from the more traditional SUV styling themes that tend to dominate the segment. Calty designers leaned more heavily on a sleek sedan concept with a wide stance that featured a sporty exterior and premium comfort interior but would also be equipped with important SUV attributes such as cargo space, towing capability and all-wheel-drive performance.

The exterior design of the four-door Venza begins with an imposing front end featuring a distinctive grille, headlights and fog lamps for an aggressive, yet classy appearance. The front conforms to a sleek and aerodynamic shape with short overhangs, crisp character lines and a roofline and ground clearance that are lower than a typical crossover. From behind, Venza's refined appearance is complete with an angled rear hatch, rear spoiler and wide wraparound tail lights that interconnect with the hatch door.

On the inside, Calty designers and TTC engineers made comfort, refinement and utility a priority for the five-passenger Venza. A lower rocker design will allow occupants to more easily step in and out of the vehicle than a typical sedan. Venza will also feature a higher ride height and hip points that will help provide significantly better driver visibility than most sedans and easier ingress and egress than most SUVs.

Venza will feature a spacious interior providing ample room for all five passengers and abundant SUV-like cargo space behind the second row of seats. The rear hatch provides a low cargo height that allows for easy loading and unloading of luggage and outdoor gear. Easy-to-use levers, one on each side of the rear cargo area, allow the 60/40 split rear seats to fold flat, providing additional storage space for extra long items such as surf boards, skis, camping gear and gardening equipment. For added passenger comfort, the rear seats recline up to 14 degrees.

A creative interior design complemented with an array of comfort and convenience features provides Venza with a refined look and feel that is commonly reserved for a luxury sedan. The flow of the instrumentation panel (IP) creates a unique 60/60 design that gives both driver and front passenger the look and feeling that 60 percent of the IP is accessible from their seating position.

An extra long center console extends from the IP and slopes down to a center compartment with a unique sliding console cover. Sliding open the compartment lid reveals a large storage well deep enough to hold a large purse. The compartment is also illuminated and equipped with an auxiliary audio jack and 12-volt power point. The upper portion of the center console houses the gear-shift lever for easy and comfortable driver access. Climate control functions are centrally located on the upper center console, providing easy accessibility for both driver and passenger. The center console also contains an iPod/MP3 storage compartment with wire management and illuminated dual cupholders.

All Venza models will be equipped with an array of standard features including auto dual zone air conditioning, AM/FM six-disc CD, tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, remote keyless entry, electrochromic rearview mirror with compass, a multi-information display, cruise control, optitron gauges, rear wiper, privacy glass, and much more. On V6 models Venza will come standard with dual exhaust tips and will be the first Toyota model to ride on standard 20-inch alloy wheels. Four-cylinder models will come standard with 19-inch alloy wheels.

Chrome accents throughout give Venza a refined look and feel. Models equipped with an optional leather-trimmed interior will feature wood-grain-type trim and seats stitched with dark piping that is tastefully coordinated with Venza's standard linear grain dashboard and steering wheel. An array of storage space will be available throughout the vehicle to accommodate passenger belongings. A large storage compartment with an additional 12-volt power point located on the passenger side of the front center console will be sizeable enough to contain maps and magazines.

A panoramic roof will be offered as an option and will be a first for the Toyota vehicle lineup. The roof will feature separate glass panels over the front and rear seats. The front glass panel will have a power tilt/slide function.

Venza will also offer an Automatic High Beam headlight system, another Toyota first. When high beam headlights are in use sensors in the Automatic High Beam system will detect oncoming traffic and automatically switch the headlights to low-beam. When the Automatic High Beam sensors no longer detect oncoming traffic the system will switch the headlights back to high-beam mode.

Additional optional equipment will include a navigation system equipped with a JBL audio system, integrated satellite radio capability and Bluetooth® technology; a premium JBL audio system with AM/FM six-disc CD changer, satellite radio capability and Bluetooth®, rear seat entertainment system, a Smart Key System, back-up camera and a power rear door.

The sleek and sporty styling, refined interior and outstanding utility features are complemented with fun-to-drive performance attributes expected by owners with active lifestyles. Aggressive handling typically found in a performance coupe is well-balanced by the on-road comfort of an upscale sedan.

Venza will be available in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. It will provide drivers and passengers the best of both worlds by delivering the quiet comfortable ride expected from a full-size sedan along with the peace-of-mind that comes with all-wheel-drive.

Power will be generated by an available 3.5-liter V6 that will produce 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 246 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,700 rpm with a towing capability of 3,500 pounds. Standard power will come from an all-new 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that will deliver capable performance and provide excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions. Both engines will be mated with a six-speed sequential-shift electronically-controlled automatic transmission.

Venza will be equipped with a comprehensive list of standard safety features. It will provide a total of seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, front seat-mounted side airbags, and side curtain airbags for both rows of seats. Venza will also be the first sedan with Toyota's STAR safety system, featuring anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and vehicle stability control. Venza will also feature active head rests as standard equipment.

"Venza will establish an exciting new crossover niche that will combine the finest attributes of Toyota's diverse vehicle lineup," said Carter. "It will cater to buyers who are looking for the value and reliability of a Camry, the comfort and upscale refinement of an Avalon, and the utility and functionality of a Highlander SUV in one very stylish and sporty package."

"When it goes on sale in late 2008, the Venza crossover sedan will represent Toyota's latest commitment to driving change in the marketplace."

Saturn Vue Green Line Plug-in Hybrid SUV May Begin Production in 2010

Expected to be First Commercially Available, OEM-produced Plug-in Hybrid

2008-01-14, DETROIT - Saturn announced today at the North American International Auto Show that production may begin as soon as 2010 on a plug-in hybrid electric version of the Saturn Vue Green Line, expected to be the first regular production plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Depending on a consumer's drive cycle, the Vue plug-in hybrid will be the most fuel-efficient vehicle offered by a major automaker.

Saturn Vue Green Line Plug-in HybridSaturn Vue Green Line Plug-in Hybrid

This Vue Green Line will use a modified version of GM's two-mode hybrid system and plug-in technology, a lithium-ion battery pack, highly efficient electronics and powerful electric motors to achieve significant increases in fuel economy. When the lithium-ion batteries are fully charged, the Vue plug-in hybrid will potentially double the fuel efficiency of any current SUV. After electric-only propulsion depletes the lithium-ion energy storage system to a specified level, the battery is replenished by utilizing the two-mode hybrid system's electric motors and regenerative brake systems.

"We announced late in 2006 that a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle was a top priority, and the fact that we're now announcing production timing to bring the industry's first plug-in to market, while tackling many technology hurdles along the way, demonstrates our commitment to diversifying from petroleum and reducing emissions," said Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak.

In early testing, the Vue Green Line plug-in hybrid is capable of electric-only propulsion for more than 10 miles at low speeds. At higher speeds or when conditions demand it, such as brisk acceleration, a combination of engine and electric power or engine power-only drives the vehicle.

The vehicle's lithium-ion batteries can be fully recharged in four to five hours by simply connecting the vehicle to any standard 110V household electrical outlet. The connection port on the vehicle will be integrated into the front fender. By recharging rather than refueling, the Vue Green Line plug-in hybrid reduces petroleum consumption.

A plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle differs from a non-plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle by offering extended electric-only propulsion, additional battery capacity and the ability to be recharged from an external electrical outlet.

The two-mode hybrid system to be introduced on the 2009 Saturn Vue Green Line 2 Mode will be altered for use with plug-in technology. In addition to plug-in capabilities and the modified two-mode hybrid system, the Saturn Vue Green Line hybrid SUV's powertrain will feature two interior permanent magnet motors within the two-mode transmission and GM's 3.6L V-6 VVT gasoline engine with direct injection. The lithium-ion energy storage system will be replenished by utilizing the two-mode hybrid system's electric motors and regenerative braking systems.

The Saturn Vue Green Line plug-in maintains two driving modes - one for city driving, the other for highway driving - and four fixed mechanical gears to maximize efficiency while maintaining performance. In addition, special controls will be utilized to enable higher speeds during electric-only propulsion and maintain electric-only propulsion for longer periods of time.

Audi R8 Sports Car Goes Diesel in Detroit at 2008 NAIAS

Audi's R8-based concept car delivers 500PS and 1,000 Nm thanks to V12 TDI power

Jan 14, 2008 -- After ripping up the Le Mans racing rulebook with the diesel-powered R10 TDI, Audi is exploring the possibility of breaking yet another mould with a road-going R8-based TDI super-car. The R8 V12 TDI Concept makes its debut at this month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, replacing the production sports car’s mid-mounted petrol FSI V8 with a 12-cylinder TDI endowed with an incredible 1,000Nm of torque.

2008 Audi R8

2008 Audi R8

Highlights:
• Design study based on acclaimed R8 road car adopts 6.0-litre, 12-cylinder TDI engine first seen in Q7 V12 TDI
• Debuted on Press Day at the North American International Auto Show on January 13
• 6.0-litre bi-turbo TDI engine develops 500PS and 1,000Nm of torque from 1,750rpm to 3,000rpm. 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds, top speed in excess of 186mph
• Already complies with proposed EU6 emission limits expected to apply from 2014, thanks to highly efficient common rail system with piezo injectors, twin particulate filters and new ultra low emission system
• Includes Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping and specially developed version of Audi drive select system with 'Sport' and 'Race' settings
• Satellite navigation system incorporates race circuit information and centrifugal force / boost pressure data when in 'Race' mode

First seen in the forthcoming Q7 V12 TDI SUV, the 6.0 litre twin-turbo V12 engine with 500PS is similar in basic concept to the R10 TDI’s 5.5 litre race engine. It delivers its colossal 1,000Nm output from just 1,750rpm, guaranteeing the effortless delivery of a 4.2 second, 0-62mph acceleration time and a top speed in excess of 186mph.

Despite these astonishing statistics, this remarkable engine shows restraint when it comes to environmental impact. Its fundamental efficiency, achieved through an advanced common rail fuel injection system enhanced by piezo injectors, is complemented by twin particulate filters and a new, innovative ultra-low emission system that ensures compliance with the EU6 emission limits expected to apply from 2014.

The heart of the system is a special catalytic converter downstream of the oxidising catalyst and particulate filter. The second component is an additional tank containing an aqueous urea solution. Small quantities of the solution, known as "AdBlue," are injected into the exhaust system. The hot exhaust gases break the solution down to form ammonia that splits the nitric oxides into inert nitrogen and water. The system remains effective for the entire service life of the vehicle.

The R8’s classic mid-engine configuration, combined with the advanced Audi Space Frame® (ASF) lightweight aluminium panelling attached to an aluminium frame, provides the best operating conditions for the futuristic chassis, which also contains a high proportion of aluminium components.

Audi magnetic ride.
The V12 TDI Concept is equipped with the advanced Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system, which uses magnetorheological fluid containing minute magnetic particles that can be affected by an electromagnetic field. By applying a voltage to the system’s electromagnets, the viscosity of the fluid is changed by these magnetic particles. This increas resistance to damper movement to correct pitch and roll when necessary, and reduce resistance at times when ride comfort is of greater importance. The system constantly monitors road conditions and driving style and reacts accordingly.

A specially tailored version of Audi drive select, the adaptive dynamics system introduced recently in the new A4 Saloon, also helps to personalise the driving experience. Offering ‘Dynamic’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Race’ settings, it enables further fine-tuning of the magnetic ride dampers and the parameters of the engine and transmission. With ‘Race’ setting selected on a circuit, the interior instrument lighting changes from white to red and the onboard satellite navigation system displays navigation information relating to the specific circuit being driven, along with a lap timer. Supplementary information, including centrifugal force and boost pressure, can also be accessed in this mode.

quattro® four-wheel-drive reassurance.
Whether on road or circuit, the R8 is effectively moderated by high-performance carbon fibre-reinforced ceramic brakes, and by the legendary quattro® permanent four-wheel-drive system. This apportions power to front and rear axles in constantly varying degrees dictated by road conditions and prevents the less desirable handling traits often exhibited by powerful mid-engine, rear-drive sports cars.

Additional downforce is provided by a specially developed, larger version of the production car’s automatically extending rear spoiler, combined with a fully clad diffuser under-body and special measures such as diffuser apertures in the rear bumper. Efficient air channelling accentuates the R8’s widely acclaimed handling capabilities and, to cool the potent V12 engine, air is captured effectively by racing-derived NACA ducts in the new, passenger-side glass roof.

The engine itself is also displayed in all its glory beneath a clear glass cover, through which special air deflectors can be seen. At only 684 mm, the surprisingly compact 12-cylinder is only 166 mm longer than the V8 TDI. With the help of the 2.65 metre wheelbase, the feeling of space which sets the R8 apart from its rivals is hardly compromised.

All LED lighting technology.
Inside, the V12 TDI Concept is distinguishable by its additional aluminium and carbon fibre elements, and by its moulded, racing-style sports seats. On the outside, it is marked out by enlarged inlet and outlet ducts at the front, side and rear, LED lights, the modified rear spoiler and exclusive alloy wheels.

Segway, General Motors Continue Collaboration on Eco-Friendly Transportation Solutions

Saturn Flextreme with Integrated Segway PTs Unveiled at 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS)

DETROIT, Jan. 14, 2008 -- Today at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) Segway Inc. and General Motors (GM) are showcasing a comprehensive solution for eco-friendly mobility - the Saturn Flextreme concept car with integrated Segway(R) Personal Transporters (PTs).

The Saturn Flextreme is built on GM's global E-Flex electric drive architecture that was first debuted by the Opel brand at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show last October. The Flextreme design is the first functional automotive concept that integrates an onboard storage and charging system for two Segway PTs.

"Segway is committed to developing safe, clean, innovative products that are redefining transportation for consumers and businesses," said Jim Norrod, Segway's chief executive officer. "The Flextreme concept with integrated Segway PTs is a great example of the evolution of transportation."

The two Segway PTs housed in the concept's FlexLoad(R) cargo space operate on the same balancing technology used in the well-known personal transporters available today. Using Segway Smart Motion(TM) -- a unique combination of sensors, propulsion and intelligence -- the Segway PT balances in place and moves in response to the way the rider moves his or her body forward, backward, left or right.

Special adjustments have been made to the Segway PT prototypes for easy loading and unloading into the Flex-Load cargo space. The tire diameter and track width were optimized to fit inside the vehicle and the prototypes have a unique exterior design to match the look and feel of the Flextreme, making them a cohesive part of this integrated transportation solution. Most notably, these Segway PT units have retractable handlebars that allow for more compact storage. Built into the Flex-Load cargo area are ramps used to load and unload the Segway PTs. The Segway PT units attach to a docking station inside the cargo space where they recharge while the Flextreme batteries charge.

"Saturn has a legacy of environmental responsibility, so products like this Flextreme concept with its integrated Segway PTs showcase our continued pursuit of consumer-focused, green technologies," said Jill Lajdziak, Saturn's General Manager.

"The Segway and GM teams worked closely to integrate the Segway PT into the Flextreme's functionality and innovative design," said Doug Field, Segway's chief technology officer. "It was a collaboration that resulted in one package with both short and long-distance transportation solutions."

Like the Flextreme, the Segway PT is electrically powered and does not produce emissions during operation. Powered by two lithium-ion batteries, the Segway PT typically takes eight to ten hours to charge at a 110/220 volt outlet and consumes about one kilowatt hour of energy while recharging(1).

Considering a rider can travel up to 24 miles on one battery charge the Segway PT consumes .0.052 kilowatt hours per mile on average. The production of 52 watt-hours of electricity creates 0.081 lbs. of carbon dioxide - that is 70 to 80 percent less than the emissions created by other individual transportation devices such as gas-powered scooters or motorcycles, respectively(2). Moreover, the Segway PT is four to five times more energy efficient than a motorcycle or scooter.

The Saturn Flextreme concept with Segway PT prototypes will be on display at the NAIAS Jan. 14 - 27, 2008 at the Cobo Hall Convention Center in Detroit.

While celebrating the formidable SLR race cars of the 1950s, the launch of Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren coupe marked a new era for high-technology, high-performance cars. Like the SLR coupe, the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster unites the legend of the highly successful SLR race cars from the 1950s with the innovative technology of modern Formula 1 vehicles from the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes racing team. With a unique front mid-engine design that provides optimum weight distribution, the open two-seater features a carbon-fiber racing-type monocoque chassis and high-performance ceramic composite brake discs for remarkable braking.

Distinctive stylistic elements such as the arrow-shaped nose of the Formula 1 Silver Arrow establish a visual link with the F1 race cars. The SLR legend of the 1950s lives on stylistically in the distinctive lateral louvers, side pipes behind the front wheels and wide-opening gull-wing doors.

A Carbon-Fiber Monocoque

One dramatic example of technology transfer from Formula 1 racing is the carbon fiber composite material of the SLR body, which provides rigidity and strength never before achieved in a street car. Apart from two aluminium engine frames, its body is made entirely of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials – still an unusual feature among high-performance sports cars. The result is low weight, extremely high occupant safety as well as a degree of torsional rigidity not possible in traditional open-top vehicles.

World Premiere For Vision GLK: Entry Luxury SUV From Mercedes-Benz

Vision GLK: one SUV with two different faces

The Vision GLK FREESIDE and Vision GLK TOWNSIDE represent two expressions of the same vehicle which are set to take the SUV world by storm. By presenting these two different vehicle profiles, Mercedes-Benz is highlighting the tremendous potential of the entry luxury SUV study, which is making its world debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

2009 Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK Freeside

2009 Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK Freeside

Whereas the Vision GLK FREESIDE is an all-rounder that showcases the capabilities of today's SUV vehicles both on and off the road, the TOWNSIDE version is designed to make its mark with dynamic performance on the tarmac.

The Vision GLK FREESIDE and Vision GLK TOWNSIDE provide a stylistically sound preview of a future midsize SUV model bursting with character. The two studies incorporate elements taken from the original angular design of the G-Class, whilst at the same time impressing with design features typical of today's Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. Both stem from the same gene pool, yet each distinguishes itself with a personality all of its own. In the words of Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG: "The Vision GLK FREESIDE and TOWNSIDE reveal new possibilities for the logical progression of our extremely successful model strategy in the SUV segment." Dr. Zetsche has a particularly strong link to the compact and striking Vision GLK models, which dates back to his time as a vehicle developer in the mid-1980s when one of his responsibilities was the development of the legendary G-Class. Looking back now, there is something he would like to make clear: "The requirements profiles have changed over time. One thing has certainly remained the same, however: a model from Mercedes with the letter "G" in its name must be capable of performing exceptionally under any conditions."

The FREESIDE and TOWNSIDE take trademark SUV characteristics, such as solidity and off-road capability, and unite them with refined motoring culture on everyday roads. In both cases, the AGILITY CONTROL suspension promises exceptional driving dynamics and agility, coupled with exemplary ride comfort plus pioneering standards of active safety. The GLK FREESIDE emphasizes its off-road abilities with its special detachable body parts and rugged underride guard, while the Vision GLK TOWNSIDE with sports suspension unleashes its strengths in city terrain. Both concept vehicles feature a highly robust bodyshell which ensures superior driving dynamics, rigidity and occupant safety.

Responsive performance is guaranteed in both model versions regardless of conditions, thanks to the latest generation of economical and eco-friendly BLUETEC four-cylinder drive units under the hood, which operate in unison with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission and the new 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The compact-sized concept models also feature a number of technical highlights which are normally reserved for the more exclusive vehicle categories. In addition to the PRE-SAFE anticipatory safety concept and the ILS Intelligent Light System, features include the COMAND APS infotainment center with its intuitive operating concept, a rear-seat entertainment system including two screens, plus THERMOTRONIC 3-zone automatic climate control.

The interiors of the two studies match the expressive design of the exterior, and present an enticing mix of high-grade materials plus an ergonomically coherent overall concept. Both instantly convey that characteristic Mercedes feel of security, but interpret it in two completely different styles. The Vision GLK FREESIDE immerses its occupants in an ambience of luxury and comfort, with white leather appointments and wood trim elements in a satin finish. The light aquamarine leather upholstery and trim elements made from brushed aluminium in the interior of the TOWNSIDE, on the other hand, set a more sporty tone.

Expressive, bold, independent – the Vision GLK design

Borrowing from the styling characteristics of all Mercedes-Benz SUV models confers a special status on both the FREESIDE and TOWNSIDE. As Head of Design Prof. Peter Pfeiffer neatly sums up: "With the G-Class we created a style icon that has been a yardstick for nearly 30 years now. Unifying this puristic design with the new Mercedes-Benz design idiom is what makes the two Vision GLK variants genuine characters in their own right."

Never before has it been possible to enjoy such a strikingly expressive preview of a forthcoming SUV model. The interplay between the original angular design and the design features associated with all modern Mercedes-Benz passenger cars exerts an enthralling appeal. The clear-cut design idiom, where taut lines interact with large, overextended surfaces, coincides with the bodyshell attributes of practical off-road vehicles, including short overhangs, a vertical front end, slender A-pillars, a steeply angled windscreen and flat roof lines. Specially manufactured 20-inch light-alloy wheels, adapted in each case to reflect the differing characters of the FREESIDE and TOWNSIDE, inject the bodies of the two Vision GLK models with extra power and vibrancy, as do the muscular contours of the wheel arches.

The bodywork's styling is far from being a means to an end in itself, however, rather it allows the benefits that are typically associated with off-road vehicles to be transferred for the first time to the more on-road-orientated, SUV class. Large angles of approach and departure coupled to generous ground clearance make excursions off the beaten track a pleasurable experience.

Artfully setting off the persuasive design concept of the Vision GLK models are two special-effect paint finishes. "Diamond white magno" a metallic paint finish with a matte clear coat, gives the FREESIDE an extravagant flair. On top of this, detachable body parts finished in gleaming sterling silver generate an intriguing contrast. The TOWNSIDE, meanwhile, is resplendent in "Alubeam blue", a special high-gloss reflective paint finish of unprecedented depth which emphasises the body's sporty qualities.

Interior sets new trends in the compact premium segment

The interior of the GLK studies is a seamless continuation of the exterior's bold looks, serving up a surprising interaction of stylistic contrasts that is generated by the juxtaposition of two quite different design approaches. On the one hand, both Vision GLK models offer a luxurious interior, boasting materials of exquisite appeal and precision build quality down to the finest detail. At the same time, the sophisticated surface finishes transfer the contemporary Mercedes design into the interior. Central to the interior design is the dashboard which extends to the door panels lending additional width to the generously proportioned passenger compartment. It is impossible to overlook the elegant strip of trim elements which extends across the dashboard's entire width, dividing the base structure into three vertically arranged levels. On the FREESIDE, this element is dominated by matte-finish anthracite-coloured cebrano wood with a white grain, along with a perfectly positioned seam of chrome. In the TOWNSIDE, brushed aluminium appears here to underline the dynamic character.

On both versions, the upper section of the dashboard is trimmed in black leather and spans the instrument cluster and the static central display of the COMAND screen in a single sweep. At the bottom, as well as on the center console and in the footwells, the different styling touches that distinguish the two Vision models appear once again. The FREESIDE's interior picks up on the exterior paintwork's color scheme. The seats and lower door trims are upholstered in white leather, which has been treated with a special coating method to give it the same matte sheen as the exterior's "diamond white magno" paint finish. Quite apart from the stunning visual effect, this treatment of the natural covers gives them a silky soft surface that is kind to the skin and pleasant to the touch. Black piping seams on the seats help create the harmonious contrast between black and white. The interior appointments of the TOWNSIDE emphasise its sporty ambitions, with leather upholstery and trim whose light aquamarine colour complements the tones of the exterior's "Alubeam blue" finish. Here, dark blue piping seams produce a visually coherent contrast.

The driver's armrest and the COMAND multi controller are positioned for optimum ergonomics. The tried-and-tested operating logic borrowed from the S-Class makes it possible to navigate through the individual menus intuitively. Additional direct access buttons make it easier to call up the principal main functions.

Both Vision variants protect their occupants with an all-encompassing safety concept founded on a high-strength passenger call and energy-absorbing crumple zones at the front and rear. Extensive protective measures include front airbags, sidebags and windowbags, a kneebag for the driver, along with crash-responsive head restraints.

New BLUETEC four-cylinder engines

The Vision GLK studies are powered by a brand new generation of diesel engines. The four-cylinder 2.2-liter unit furthers the basic dynamic driving concept of the automotive siblings, and is capable of generating exhilarating performance from its output of 125 kW/170 hp and 369-lb.ft. of torque whilst at the same time cutting fuel consumption and emission figures. Technical highlights of the extremely compact and smooth-running CDI powerplant with rearward camshaft drive include the fourth-generation common-rail direct injection with an injection pressure of 2,000 bar, as well as a two-stage turbocharger system.

The modular BLUETEC emission control system has been further enhanced by Mercedes-Benz, and is now being combined in its most efficient form for the very first time with a four-cylinder engine. "BLUETEC gives us a technology that makes it possible for us to combine the high efficiency and impressive torque of modern diesel engines with extremely low emissions – a perfect propulsion unit for a compact SUV like the GLK," declares Dr Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and responsible for corporate research and the development of Mercedes-Benz Cars. The focus of BLUETEC technology is on minimizing emissions of nitrogen oxides. These are the sole component of exhaust gases whose levels are higher in diesel engines than in their gasoline-powered counterparts due to their operating principle. The oxidising catalytic converter and maintenance-free particulate filter are supplemented by a NOx storage catalytic converter and an SCR catalytic converter. AdBlue, a harmless aqueous solution of urea, is injected into the exhaust stream. This method converts as much as 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides into non-toxic nitrogen and water. The study thereby provides a perfect demonstration of just how the more compact diesel models are also able to comply with the toughest emissions regulations, including even the EU6 limits that are only due to come into force for all new vehicles as of 2015. By that time, the current EU4 threshold for nitrogen oxides will have been brought down by a further 70 percent or so to 0.08 g/km. Not even the stringent U.S. BIN 5 or California's LEV2 legislation would pose an obstacle for either the FREESIDE or the TOWNSIDE.

4MATIC drive system: maximum performance under any conditions

The new 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system featured in the Vision GLK FREESIDE and Vision GLK TOWNSIDE is one of the most proficient of its kind. The basic concept, with the engine installed longitudinally and the transmission and transfer case designed as a single unit, produces a compact and lightweight arrangement that minimizes frictional losses, as well as heralding a number of further benefits compared to other systems where the drive unit is installed transversely. This layout enables the all-wheel-drive GLK to achieve the same fuel consumption as a two-wheel-drive model. Vibration and acoustic comfort are of a standard normally found in today's luxury models.

The basic 45:55 split of drive torque between the front and rear wheels combines with the ESP®, ASR and 4ETS dynamic handling control systems to produce supremely assured and perfectly predictable driving characteristics under all conditions. Optimum traction is assured at all times, along with maximum directional stability and flawless handling. The newly developed multiple-disc clutch in the center differential comes to the system's aid when friction between the tyres and ground is particularly low, for example when driving over snow or ice.

Agile driving dynamics, peerless comfort, reassuring active safety

The AGILITY CONTROL suspension fitted in the Vision GLK studies succeeds in resolving a conflict of aims that afflicts the SUV segment especially: this is because the chassis engineers seek to create a vehicle that is as sporty and agile as it is comfortable and smooth, plus, at the same time, capable of traveling off-road. If the focus is placed on sporty, dynamic handling, there must be a certain firmness to the suspension and shock absorbers, which both precludes the desired ride comfort typical of the Mercedes-Benz brand and imposes restrictions on the vehicle's abilities in off-road terrain. If, on the other hand, the vehicle is purpose-built for ride comfort and off-road expertise by fitting softer dampers, its driving dynamics will be compromised. "Amplitude-responsive damping" provides the solution: here, the shock absorber's smoothing forces are of a flexible nature, rather than having a rigid setting. During normal driving along moderately contoured roads or off-road excursions at low speeds, the system is tuned for soft response to the benefit of the occupants' sense of wellbeing and the vehicle's off-road abilities. In order to keep the occupants feeling at their ease when driving at a quicker pace or performing abrupt evasive maneuvers, the dampers switch to a firmer setting in such situations to ensure maximum handling stability. At the same time, the driver of the Vision GLK can count on the support of the speed-sensitive steering, which provides the optimum level of power assistance as the situation changes. The system therefore makes light work of parking or off-road maneuvers by maximising power assistance. As the speed increases, however, assistance is reduced in favor of greater directional stability.

Each of the two studies capitalizes on the inherent benefits of the amplitude-responsive damping in their own way. With its rather sporty suspension tuning and a ride height that has been lowered by 30 millimetres (1.2 in.), the on-road TOWNSIDE version maximises fun at the wheel when driving on everyday roads. The FREESIDE, on the other hand, has been optimised for off-road terrain with longer spring travel and a softer basic set-up, promising the greatest possible driving pleasure regardless of the condition of the road ahead – even when there is no road in sight.

Vision GLK: the latest member to join the luxury SUV segment

Ever since the legendary G-Class was launched in 1979, Mercedes-Benz has laid claim to the role of leader in the off-roader segment. Today's Sports Utility Vehicle segment first started to take shape when Mercedes-Benz brought out the first generation of the ML-Class in 1997. Including the current generation, which made its debut in 2005, this model series has recorded around 900,000 sales to date, making it one of the most successful premium SUVs in the world. Since 2006, the GL-Class has in its turn reigned supreme in the SUV world, offering first-class travel in all conditions, both on the road and off. The Vision GLK FREESIDE and TOWNSIDE now illustrate just how the tremendous expertise gleaned from this progression of models can be transferred to a more compact format. These two SUV breeds are therefore in the very best company – just like the series-production versions which will be making their European market debut in 2008, followed by the U.S. in early 2009.

First Look: The New-Generation Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Roadster

More powerful, more economical, more intense: rediscovering intelligent roadster driving enjoyment

The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Roadsters have long captured the hearts of sports car enthusiasts. Incorporating around 650 newly developed components, the SLK models of 2008 are even more dynamic and now offer an even more emotionally charged driving experience.

New-Generation Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Roadster

New-Generation Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Roadster

Since their first appearance in 1996, the compact SLK Roadsters have come to symbolize the dynamic Mercedes-Benz brand image. Already a familiar sight on our roads, the second-generation two-seater is to be further enhanced with the implementation of extensive measures in 2008, the aim being to further emphasise the car's sporty character and continue the SLK-Class success story by introducing new, dynamic, powerful elements. Some 310,000 first-generation roadster models were sold between 1996 and 2004. And approximately 185,000 customers – some 60,000 of them in Germany alone – have already purchased the second-generation model since its launch in March 2004 (figures at year-end 2007). This means that total unit sales of the SLK Roadster are now approaching the half-million mark.

The new-generation SLK displays new sporty highlights, further enhancing the appeal of the successful two-seater with the trendsetting vario-roof that transforms the car from a roadster into a weatherproof coupé in a matter of seconds.

Distinctive character: even more pronounced arrow shape at the front end and a diffuser-style rear end

The designers have given the already dynamic-looking two-seater an even sportier appearance. Eye-catching features include the new-look front bumper with a modified air-dam arrangement and a more pronounced arrow shape. The area around the Mercedes star is also further emphasized. In addition, the designers have modified the rear end by introducing a diffuser-style lower section that makes the Roadster appear more powerful when viewed from behind – an effect that is enhanced considerably by the trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes and the AMG-inspired darkened tail lights. The larger exterior mirrors feature LED indicators with a pronounced arrow shape, while the range of light-alloy wheels has been enhanced with new designs.

High-quality cockpit and new three-spoke sports steering wheel

Many of the interior details have also been redesigned and upgraded following a careful process of material selection. Particular attention was given to optimizing the interior so as to make it even more driver-oriented. Highlights include a new three-spoke sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and a new instrument cluster with redesigned bezels.

New "gullwing red" leather appointments will be available – reminiscent of the interior appointments in the legendary 300 SL gullwing model. Further new additions include nappa leather appointments in "natural beige", which perfectly complement the new "light burl walnut" wood trim.

Enhanced audio and telematics systems

Mercedes-Benz is installing the new NTG 2.5 audio and telematics generation in the SLK for the first time. It is easier to operate and offers an even wider range of useful functions. Integrated into every radio is a hands-free system with Bluetooth technology. As an option, a new media interface in the glove compartment allows the full integration of mobile audio devices such as an iPod, which can then be operated via the audio system's user interface.

Together with the new telematics generation, Mercedes-Benz is also offering the easy-to-use, enhanced LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system as an optional extra in the SLK-Class for the first time.

Voluminous surround sound even when the roof is open

Passengers can enjoy a unique listening experience, regardless of whether the vario-roof is open or closed, thanks to the optionally available harman kardon® Logic7® sound system. Rich and voluminous surround sound makes for crystal-clear listening pleasure.

High-revving sports engine: higher output and much lower fuel consumption

The sporty credentials of the 2008 SLK generation are further enhanced by modified powerplants that consume less fuel and, therefore, emit less CO2. The six-cylinder sports engine in the SLK 350 offers substantially more power and torque. Only the SLK 55 AMG retains its familiar engine – an eight-cylinder unit that has lost none of its mesmerising performance capability and remains a unique selling point in the SLK segment.

The Mercedes-Benz engineers paid special attention to the high-revving V6 engine that makes its debut in the SLK 350. They sought much more than minor enhancements, substantially enhancing the six-cylinder unit by making sweeping changes to the mechanical setup. Three characteristics add a new dimension in driving enjoyment:

• Flexibility through high engine speeds

• Substantial increase in output

• A sporty sound that fires the emotions.

Up to 7200 revs per minute

The 3.5-liter engine effortlessly achieves engine speeds normally well out of bounds for series-production engines of this displacement. Its rated output is reached at 6500 rpm - maximum engine speed peaks at 7200 rpm. This outstanding high-revving flexibility turns the six-cylinder unit into a thoroughbred sports engine.

Its sporty pedigree is clearly noticeable behind the wheel. The engine is always responsive, more powerful than its predecessor and instantly reacts to movements of the accelerator pedal - conjuring up a touch of race track atmosphere in the cockpit. Still, comfortable driving characteristics are fully retained whatever the operating conditions.

Output increased by 32 hp

An increase in output, courtesy of the engine enhancements, adds to the decidedly sporty feel. Although the displacement remains the same at 3498 cc, the V6 now develops 300 hp – some 32 hp more than its predecessor. Peak torque has also been boosted by 7 lb-ft to 265 lb-ft at 4900 rpm. From as low as 2,000 rpm it develops 258 lb-ft, delivering impressive pulling power and outstanding performance. The SLK 350 accelerates from zero to 60 in 5.3 seconds.

The sports engine in the SLK 350 is based on the existing V6 unit but features a range of modified components. Key modifications include:

• Enhanced, weight-optimized pistons with a curved surface and a higher compression ratio of 1:11.7 (previously 1:10.7) ensure optimized efficiency.

• Single-stage intake manifold (no internal flaps) ensures a high charge even at high engine speeds.

• To address the fundamental limitations of the single-stage intake manifold at engine speeds below 4000 rpm, the camshaft position has been advanced by 5 degrees of crank-angle both on the intake and exhaust sides. The high revving quality has thus been retained both at idle speed and under partial load.

• Lightweight valves made out of ultra-high-strength and high-temperature-resistant steel. The sodium-cooled valve stems for the exhaust valves have a 3.4-mm bore.

• Conical springs with heavily dampened natural vibration characteristics reliably close the valves even at high engine speeds.

• A tri-oval chain sprocket, whose triangular form is barely noticeable, effectively counteracts chain-drive vibration that tends to increase at engine speeds above 6,300 rpm. The chain sprocket generates inversely phased amplitudes, thus reducing chain vibration and, in turn, the forces acting on the chain.

• A red accent atop the engine cover provides a visual distinction

Emotive sound design underlines high-performance credentials

Further aspects which add to the emotional appeal of the new engine include modified sports-engine acoustics for a more aggressive sound. In combination with the 7G‑TRONIC automatic transmission, the engine management system blips the throttle automatically during downshifts. Aside from producing an extremely sporty sound, this throttle-blipping function reduces load alteration effects.

Other engines to choose from

The engine line-up for the second generation of the successful SLK-Class is being enhanced for the facelift:

• The SLK 300 has been further improved with respect to fuel economy and, therefore, CO2 emissions. It continues to produce 228 hp from its 2,996 cc displacement, delivering 221 lb-ft of torque between 2500 and 5000 rpm. 0 to 60 takes 6.1 seconds.

• The SLK 55 AMG is equipped with the familiar 5.5-liter V8 powerplant developing 355 hp and a peak torque of 376 lb-ft. 0 to 60 mph takes 4.9 seconds before a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited) is reached.

Sporty six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed automatic transmission

Standard equipment for the SLK 300 includes a six-speed manual transmission, which provides fast, sporty gear changes coupled with supreme ease of shifting. The 7G‑TRONIC automatic transmission with seven speeds is optional on the SLK 300 and standard equipment on the SLK 350. The optional 7G‑TRONIC Sport automatic transmission, with shift paddles on the steering wheel and shorter shift times, delivers even more performance in these two models. The AMG Speedshift 7G-TRONIC, which has been specifically tuned by AMG, comes with aluminium shift paddles on the steering wheel in the SLK 55 AMG.

New direct-steer system for outstanding agility and tangible driving pleasure

A newly developed direct-steer system with variable steering assistance further highlights the qualities of the sporty chassis. The system provide agility and maneuverability when driving on twisting rural roads, steering comfort when parking and assured steering characteristics when traveling at high speed.

The direct-steer system is based on the previously available speed-sensitive power steering system and operates by purely mechanical means - there is no need for elaborate actuators and complex sensors, which would otherwise impair the direct flow of forces between the wheels and hands, compromising steering precision. At its heart is a new rack with innovative gearing, which ensures that the steering ratio changes in tune with the steering angle. The ratio is indirect when the steering is in a central position to ensure excellent straight-line stability and, therefore, a high degree of assuredness when traveling at high speed. At a steering angle of just 5 degrees, the ratio starts to increase rapidly and the steering becomes much more direct. As a result, the number of steering wheel revolutions from lock to lock is reduced by approximately 25 percent. This means that, even in city traffic, relatively little steering input is required to correct the car's path. The effect of the direct-steer system is all the more impressive in bends on rural roads. Small steering movements are all that is needed to pilot the vehicle, virtually eliminating the need to reposition the hands on the steering wheel; fast sequences of bends on rural roads can be negotiated almost intuitively – with assurance, precision and a healthy dose of driving enjoyment. All of which translates into far more agile handling.

SLK 55 AMG with direct-steer system and even more striking appearance

The SLK 55 AMG is now even more dynamic. The appearance of the sporty roadster now reinforces the car’s special status. The redesigned front apron with a more pronounced arrow-shape, the modified Mercedes star, enlarged air dams and a black-painted transverse fin on the lower section ensure a distinctly masculine appearance. Large, round foglamps with chrome surrounds are now positioned further outwards, enhancing the impression of width. The heat from the integral engine oil cooler is vented via side outlets in the front apron. The specific SLK 55 AMG bodystyling also includes AMG side skirts, the muscular AMG rear apron with a black insert and the AMG trunk lid spoiler.

New features also include the projection-beam headlamps with dark surrounds and the redesigned exterior mirrors. The mirrors are now larger to provide better rearward visibility while LED indicator repeaters in an arrow design also ensure increased safety. New, high-sheen 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a double-spoke design provide a striking appearance when viewed from the side. With a width of 7.5 and 8.5 inches respectively, the AMG light-alloy wheels are fitted with size 225/40 (front) and 245/35 (rear) tires. Outstanding deceleration values are ensured by the AMG high-performance braking system with internally ventilated and perforated brake discs, size 345x30 mm, at the front. The newly developed direct-steer system is also part of the standard specification.

Functional interior with new AMG instrument cluster

In the functional and sporty interior of the SLK 55 AMG, the new AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel with its three-spoke design gives a visual hint of the direct steering feature. The grip area is specially shaped and lined with perforated leather, while the vertical spoke is embellished by a silver-coloured insert. Two aluminium AMG shift paddles allow manual gear selection.

The AMG instrument cluster with a 200 mph speedometer scale, silver/red needles and AMG lettering also has a new look; the new graphics ensure that vehicle speed and rpm are even more easily legible.

The highly successful E-Class line of full-size sedans and wagons features an impressively broad and versatile range of models for 2008. Spanning from the thrifty, super-clean E320 BLUETEC diesel to the 507-hp E63 AMG, the E-Class offers the perfect car for an equally diverse range of consumer needs.

2008 Mercedes-Benz E300 BLUETEC and E350 CGI

2008 Mercedes-Benz E300 BLUETEC and E350 CGI

The E320 BLUETEC luxury sedan delivers up to 32 miles per gallon (highway cycle), while at the other end of the product spectrum, the high-performance E63 AMG can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in an eye-popping 4.3 seconds.

New AMG Sport Package Offered

To complement its popular sport package (comprised of lowered sport suspension, 18-inch wheels, a sport rear bumper with dual chrome exhaust pipes, blue-tinted glass and white gauges), the E350 and E550 models are now available with an optional AMG Sport package that includes deeper front and rear aprons with dual exhausts, 18-inch AMG wheels and an AMG steering wheel that’s complete with manual shift “paddles.”

BLUETEC – A Blueprint For The World’s Cleanest Diesels

Combining several technologies to minimize diesel exhaust emissions, The E320 BLUETEC starts with a purpose-built 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine that includes four valves per cylinder, centrally located piezo-electric injectors, third-generation CDI direct injection, a turbocharger with variable nozzle turbine and exhaust gas recirculation.

The E320 BLUETEC incorporates four after-treatment units in the exhaust stream – an oxidizing catalytic converter, a particulate filter, a SCR catalytic converter and a “denox” storage converter that absorbs nitrogen oxides temporarily. During brief regeneration pulses of a richer fuel-air mixture, nitrogen oxides are released, reacting with other exhaust gas to form harmless nitrogen. These regeneration pulses also raise temperatures in the particulate filter, which burns off the accumulated deposits. The result – BLUETEC can make a diesel as clean as a modern gasoline engine.

BLUETEC depends on the use of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (less than 15 parts per million) that became available in the U.S. in October of 2006. Sulfur is a natural element in most mineral oils that increases particulate emissions and has a corrosive effect on engine parts as well. The availability of very low-sulfur fuel enables the use of reliable particulate filters and efficient nitrogen-oxide after-treatment.

In October 2007, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a version of its E320 BLUETEC that is available through a special two year lease to a limited number of customers in California. California’s stringent emissions requirements have kept new diesel automobiles models off the California market for the better part of a decade. The new E320 BLUETEC, distinguished as the “2007 World Green Car” by an international panel of journalists, changes all that.

Last year, the company also announced that it would introduce a Cummins turbodiesel engine after 2009 for the Dodge Ram 1500. The engine will meet 50-state emissions standards, and will deliver a 30-percent fuel economy improvement.

“Dodge Ram is known for capability, utility and performance,” said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President – Product Development, Chrysler LLC. “The addition of hybrid and diesel powertrains to our all-new Dodge Ram 1500 lineup is sure to attract an array of new customers looking for the ultimate combination of full-size pickup fuel efficiency, performance and capability.”

The hybrid and diesel offerings for Dodge Ram are in addition to three gasoline powertrain options:

* An all-new 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, that delivers a 4 percent increase in fuel economy for 2009 while producing 380 horsepower and 404 lb.-ft. of torque
* A new for 2008 4.7-liter flex-fuel V-8, that resulted in an increase in fuel economy while producing 310 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque
* A 3.7-liter V-6 that generates 215 horsepower and 235 lb.-ft. of torque

The renowned HEMI powerplant, in hybrid form, will continue to feature Chrysler’s Multi-displacement System (MDS), which allows the engine to seamlessly alternate between four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. The two-mode hybrid system provides assistance from electric motors allowing the HEMI V-8 to remain in four-cylinder mode more often than without a hybrid powertrain, improving overall fuel economy.

The Advanced Two-mode Hybrid System
Chrysler’s advanced, state-of-the-art two-mode full hybrid system — developed in partnership with General Motors, Mercedes-Benz and The BMW Group — integrates proven automatic-transmission technology with a patented hybrid-electric drive system to deliver the world’s first two-mode full hybrid.

As a result of low- and high-speed electrically variable transmission (EVT) modes, the system is defined as a “two-mode hybrid.” In addition, the sophisticated fuel-saving system incorporates four fixed-gear ratios for high efficiency and power-handling capabilities. During the two EVT modes, the system can use the electric motors to improve fuel economy, acceleration, and for regenerative braking to utilize energy that would normally be lost during braking or deceleration. The energy is stored in the batteries for later use.

The system’s two modes are optimized for city and highway driving.

In the first mode — at low speed and with light loads — the vehicle can operate in three ways:

* Electric power only
* Engine power only
* Any combination of engine and electric power

The two-mode hybrid provides all of the fuel-saving benefits of a full-hybrid system, including electric-only operation. In this mode, the engine is “shut off,” with the vehicle moving under electric-only power at low speed. The result is a significant reduction in fuel consumption in heavy stop-and-go traffic.

The second mode is used primarily at highway speeds. In addition to electric assist, the second mode provides full power from the 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 when conditions demand it, such as when passing, pulling a trailer or climbing a steep grade.

Hybrid Development Center
Located in Troy, Mich., the Hybrid Development Center (General Motors, Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz and The BMW Group) jointly developed the overall modular two-mode hybrid system and the individual components: electric motors, transmission, high-voltage battery, high-performance electronics, wiring, safety systems, energy management and hybrid-system control units. In addition, the Hybrid Development Center is responsible for system integration and project management.

Chrysler Advanced Propulsion Technology
Hybrid technology is one part of Chrysler’s advanced propulsion technology umbrella, which also includes efficient gasoline engines, advanced clean-diesel technology, biofuel capable powertrain and zero-emission fuel cell vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz at NAIAS 2008

Mercedes-Benz celebrates a double world premiere in Detroit: Debut appearance of entry luxury SUV and the new-generation SLK

Detroit – The Vision GLK FREESIDE and Vision GLK TOWNSIDE represent two expressions of the same vehicle which are set to take the SUV world by storm. Both of these studies are celebrating their world premiere at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Whereas the Vision GLK FREESIDE showcases the capabilities of today's SUV vehicles both on and off the road, the TOWNSIDE version is designed to make its mark with dynamic performance on the tarmac.

2009 Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK Freeside

2009 Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK Freeside

By presenting two such different profiles, Mercedes-Benz is seeking to demonstrate the tremendous potential of the mid-size SUV study. The new generation of the SLK is also making its debut in Detroit. It is now even more dynamic, and offers a brand of emotionally-charged driving pleasure that is more intense than ever. Key visual changes include the restyled front and rear, as well as the meticulously modified interior. The two-seater's decidedly dynamic character is brought out to particularly good effect by the high-revving 300-hp V6 sports engine featured in the SLK 350, as well as by the direct-steer system.

Despite the fact that their output has been increased, in some cases substantially so, all of the engines make far more economical use of the fuel, meaning that their CO2 emissions have been cut once again.

Also going on show for the first time in the U.S. are two innovative new models with groundbreaking drive technologies that are designed to guarantee a clean and economical future for premium-class motoring – the S 300 BLUETEC HYBRID with a compact hybrid module, as well as the ML 450 HYBRID with gasoline engine and innovative two-mode hybrid system for purely electrical operation. The Stuttgart-based automotive group is thereby progressing exactly as planned with its "Road to the Future" strategy.

The Vision GLK FREESIDE and Vision GLK TOWNSIDE provide a stylistic preview of a future midsize SUV model bursting with character. The two studies incorporate elements taken from the family of Mercedes-Benz SUV’s, however it clearly has its own unique styling. In the words of Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG: "The Vision GLK FREESIDE and TOWNSIDE reveal new possibilities for the logical progression of our extremely successful model strategy in the SUV segment."

The FREESIDE and TOWNSIDE represent a perfect balance of aggressive styling, versatility and performance. In both cases, the AGILITY CONTROL suspension promises exceptional driving dynamics and agility, coupled with exemplary ride comfort and pioneering standards of active safety. The GLK FREESIDE version emphasizes its off-road abilities with its special detachable body parts and rugged underride guard, while the Vision GLK TOWNSIDE with sports suspension unleashes its strengths on the blacktop. Both concept vehicles feature a highly robust bodyshell which ensures superior driving dynamics, rigidity and occupant safety.

Responsive performance is guaranteed in both model versions regardless of the conditions thanks to the latest generation of economical and eco-friendly BLUETEC four-cylinder, which operate in unison with the 7G‑TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission and the new 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The two concept models also feature a number of technical highlights normally reserved for more exclusive vehicle categories. Quite apart from the PRE-SAFE anticipatory safety concept and the ILS Intelligent Light System, these include the COMAND APS infotainment system with its intuitive operating concept, a rear-seat entertainment system including two screens, plus THERMOTRONIC 3-zone automatic climate control.

The interiors of the two studies match the expressive design of the exterior, and present an enticing mix of high-grade materials and ergonomically coherent overall concept. Both instantly convey that characteristic Mercedes feel of security, but interpret it in two completely different styles. The Vision GLK FREESIDE immerses its occupants in an ambience of luxury and comfort, with white leather appointments and wood trim elements in a satin finish. The light aquamarine leather upholstery and brushed aluminium trim elements in the interior of the TOWNSIDE, on the other hand, set a more sporty tone.

New generation of the SLK for intense driving pleasure

The latest generation of the SLK blazes a trail of new sporty highlights, and bestows yet greater appeal on this two-seater sports car with its trendsetting vario-roof, that transforms it from roadster to weatherproof coupé in a matter of seconds.

The designers have honed the looks of the two-seater for added sportiness. Especially eye-catching is the restyled front bumper, featuring modified segmentation of the air intakes and a more pronounced V-shape, while the area around the Mercedes star is further emphasized. The designers have also redesigned the vehicle's rear section, with the diffuser-look styling giving the roadster an even more powerful appearance from behind.

Many of the interior's details have also been revised, and the interior has been refined as a whole by meticulous material selection. Particular care was taken to optimize the interior to make it that much more driver-focused. The focal point in this respect is formed by a new three-spoke sports steering wheel with multifunction controls, as well as a new instrument cluster with redesigned bezels.

For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is equipping the SLK with the new NTG 2.5 generation of audio and telematics componentry. This boasts improved user friendliness together with even more convenient functions. All audio systems come complete with built-in hands-free capability with Bluetooth technology. Also available is a new optional media interface in the glove compartment, which enables mobile audio devices such as the iPod to be fully integrated into the audio system and operated from its control panel.

The switch to the new telematics generation now sees Mercedes-Benz offering the optimized LINGUATRONIC voice control system, renowned for its outstanding operation, as an option in the SLK-Class for the first time.

Customers who wish to enjoy the ultimate acoustic experience, whether driving with the vario-roof up or down, can opt for the harman kardon® Logic7® sound system. Here, the passenger compartment is filled by a rich surround sound, delivering crystal-clear listening pleasure of unprecedented quality for a roadster.

High-revving sports engine: added power and considerably lower consumption

Making a strong contribution to the sporty billing of the 2008 generation of the SLK are reengineered drive units which stand out by virtue of their lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. Most notably, the six-cylinder engine in the SLK 350 benefits from a substantial increase in output and torque. Only the SLK 55 AMG retains its familiar engine – an eight-cylinder unit that has lost none of its mesmerising performance capability and remains a unique selling point in the SLK segment.

The Mercedes-Benz engineers devoted particular attention to the high-revving V6 sports engine, making its debut in the new-generation SLK. By performing a major overhaul of the engine's mechanics, the engineers succeeded in giving the V6 unit a sporty new character. From an unaltered displacement of 3498 cubic centimetres it now musters 300 hp at 6500 rpm, a whole 32 hp more than the engine it replaces. Torque has also been increased (+ 7 lb-ft) and now peaks at 265 lb-ft at 4900 rpm.

This has been achieved by raising the rev limiter to 7200 rpm, increasing the compression ratio, fitting a new intake manifold and making extensive modifications to the valvetrain.

The new engine also strikes a far more emotive-sounding note after being deliberately tuned to deliver resonant sports engine acoustics. When partnered with the 7G‑TRONIC automatic transmission, the engine management system blips the throttle automatically during downshifts – not only does this create a very sporty soundtrack, it helps to limit load-alteration effects too.

Other engines to choose from

The engine line-up for the second generation of the successful SLK-Class is being enhanced for the facelift:

· The SLK 300 has been optimized for lower fuel consumption, and therefore CO2 emissions. Its 3.0 liter V-6 produces 228 hp.

· At work under the hood of the SLK 55 AMG is the familiar 5.5-liter V8 powerplant delivering 355 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque.

New direct-steer system for immense agility and tangible fun at the wheel

A new direct-steer system with variable power assistance that elicits the very best from the suspension's sporty capabilities has been developed. The system provides agility and maneuverability when driving on twisting rural roads, steering comfort when parking and assured steering characteristics when traveling at high speed.

The direct-steer system is derived from the previous speed-sensitive power steering and operates purely mechanically. This dispenses with the need for sophisticated actuator units and complex sensors, which interfere with the direct flow of power between wheel and hand and therefore have a detrimental effect on steering precision. At the heart of the system is a new rack with ingeniously devised gearing, that is designed to alter the steering gear ratio as the steering angle changes. Around the central position, the steering has an indirect ratio for good straight-line stability, resulting in excellent safety at high speeds. As soon as the steering wheel is turned to an angle of 5 degrees, the ratio increases rapidly and the steering feels far more direct. In this way, the number of steering wheel turns from lock to lock is reduced by around 25 percent with the new direct-steer system. Consequently, relatively small turns of the steering wheel are sufficient for changing course when driving in city traffic. Meanwhile, high-speed twisty sections of country roads can be negotiated safely, precisely and with enormous pleasure using relatively small steering movements.

The 2009 MY SLK models will make their U.S. showroom debut in April 2008.

Road to the Future: S 300 BLUETEC HYBRID and ML 450 HYBRID

Fuel-efficient and eco-friendly premium cars without any compromise of safety, comfort and effortless driving pleasure: that is the ultimate aim of the long-term development plan, which Mercedes-Benz has set in stone in its "Road to the Future" sustainability strategy. The focal points of development include modular drive technologies, consisting primarily of optimized internal combustion engines accompanied by individually customized hybrid solutions, with the two power sources being deployed either individually or in unison, depending on the vehicle category, operating profile and the customer's wishes.

At Detroit 2008, Mercedes-Benz is exhibiting two especially economical and environmentally friendly models for the future. The S 300 BLUETEC HYBRID takes the same BLUETEC diesel emission control technology for the world's cleanest combustion engines that was launched in the U.S. back in 2006, and combines it with a compact hybrid module. The ML 450 HYBRID with a V6 gasoline engine, meanwhile, features a cutting-edge two-mode hybrid system that permits purely electrical operation. The Stuttgart-based automotive group is thereby progressing exactly as planned with its "Road to the Future" strategy, which began in autumn 2007 with a presentation of ultra-economical and eco-friendly models at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
